Have you ever watched a movie and seen scary makeup? Have you ever wondered how makeup artists create such a masterpiece? There’s a detailed process you can follow to create blood-gushing scars, wounds, and zombie makeup. Mrs. Blizzard, our outstanding head of the theater department, teaches kids to get creative and build the bloodiest, grossest, and scariest scars imaginable.
Last Thursday, Mrs. Blizzard taught her first, fourth, and sixth periods the art of using imagination to create scars. She taught her second, third, and fifth periods how to make realistic zombie makeup. On Friday, the eighth graders walked around the school handing out candy gloves that were purchased to raise money for the theater department. Each glove was filled with a spooktastic amount of candy.
Mrs. Blizzard, a seventh and eighth-grade theatre teacher, stated, “When I moved to McLean Middle School, I expanded the lessons into a progression of skills so students could explore more advanced techniques as they moved through the theatre program. Theatre 1 students begin with bruise makeup, Theatre 2 students advance to creating realistic-looking scars, and Theatre 3 students take on the challenge of transforming themselves into zombies using more advanced special effects makeup techniques. This progression allows students to build on what they learned in previous years while developing their creativity, attention to detail, and technical theatre skills. The lessons take place during our Halloween season, with bruise and scar makeup on Thursday, October 29, and zombie makeup on Friday, October 30, this year.”Through this hands-on Halloween tradition, McLean Middle School students did more than just paint on scary faces; they built real-world theatrical skills. From blending simple bruises to sculpting advanced zombie wounds, Mrs. Blizzard’s structured lessons gave students a unique outlet for their creativity and attention to detail.
