On the sad day of August 25, 2026, a country legend, actor, icon, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, Dolly Parton, passed away. Just four days before she passed, she explained, “I still have so many things I want to achieve,” expressing that her spirit still fights for good, even when her body can’t.
Many of our McLean Cardinals were devastated to learn the news. Despite our young age, lots of teens were deeply impacted by the world’s loss of a star. Society’s love for Dolly was shared, whether you are young or old. Our generation doesn’t feel the same loss as our parents or grandparents, but Dolly Parton inspired many of our favorite celebrities.
The Cardinal community wouldn’t be the same without Dolly. An 8th grader, Medha Bhakta, expressed, “While her death was very upsetting, it did help to revive people’s memories and stories about her, along with an increase in day-to-day kindness in her fan community. Dolly Parton was one of the best things that has ever happened to this country, and she will always be loved and remembered.” This shows how a newly 13-year-old can have the same memories and love of Dolly Parton’s impact on our society as a mature adult. Our very own Assistant Principal, Mrs. Hernandez, explained how Dolly was an amazing human being and was more than just a country singer. In Dolly Parton’s honor, she wore all pink the day after Dolly’s death.
Long-time McLean teacher, Mr. Torres, expressed his thoughts about Dolly Parton by saying, “Kindness. Dolly had every opportunity to be a billionaire, but she lived her life motivated by kindness in her decisions and ended up giving away millions to help humanity. Life is full of tough choices; looking at what choice is the kindest one often makes them easier. I’m thankful that Dolly permitted herself to be herself, and I hope everyone can follow that example.”
Students have requested a day remembering Dolly Parton’s life full of love, kindness, and selflessness on 9/25, like the iconic song, “9 to 5”. On that Friday, you could wear dress code pink (accessories, hoodies, etc.) and choose to show kindness to all and see the best in everyone. We will keep you updated on whether this gets approval. You can also do community service or make donations to charity, in true Dolly spirit.
Dolly Parton is an honorable figure who has inspired and impacted so many lives. She always gave back to her community no matter what. Dolly Parton, a generous, authentic, and humble spirit, lives on through all of us, including the younger generations.
