Throughout history, reading has been how people transferred information from one generation to the next. It’s how you can learn about other peoples experiences or take in fascinating tales written for entertainment. Either way, reading is an enjoyable experience where we can feel through our characters hardships and triumphs. Since it’s the beginning of the school year I have collected a list of books so that you can find some new exceptional books to start devouring. Please note that the following books have a wide range of levels, so make sure you know if the book is on the same level as you.
1. Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen
Hatchet by Gary Paulsen is a survival book about a boy named Brian Robenson who is lost in the Canadian wilderness after a plane crash with his only tool being a hatchet.
2. Spy School, by Stuart Gibbs
The book Spy School by Stuart Gibbs is a thrilling book about spies along with teen drama. Join Ben and Erica as they try to figure out who is the mole at their school, the CIA Academy of Espionage.
3. Smile, by Raina Telgemeier
The book Smile by Raina Telgemeier is a semi-autobiographical graphic novel that shows how hard life can be for a teenager to have teeth problems.
4. Pax, by Sara pennypacker
The book Pax by Sara Pennypacker is about the unbreakable bond between Peter and his fox, Pax. After Pax and Peter are separated they have to learn to live without each other’s company.
5. The Wishing Spell, by Chris Colfer
The book the Wishing Spell by Chris Colfer is fantasy book where twins Connor and Alex get sucked in by a fairytale book into The land of stories where they meet lots of classical characters from princesses to talking animals.
6. The Canyon’s Edge, by Dusti Bowling
The book The Canyon’s Edge by Dusti Bowling is about Nora’s struggles with surviving inside a narrow canyon after her dad’s and her climbing trip goes downhill.
7. The Girl who Drank the Moon, by Kelly Barnhill
The Girl who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill is a heartwarming story about Luna, who was raised by a witch named Xan.
8. Where the Red Fern Grows, by Wilson Rawls
Where the Red Fern Grows tells the tale of a boy named Billy and the hunting adventures he has with his two dogs, Old Dan and Little Ann.
9. The Lightning Thief, by Rick Riordan
The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan is about a boy named Percy Jackson who finds out that his dad is Poseiden and sets off on a quest along with Annabeth and Grover to try and find a way into the underworld to stop the greek gods from fighting.
10. The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is about Katniss Everdeen and how she deals with basically sacrificing herself for her sister after volunteering as girl tribute in District 12.
11. The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton
The book The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is about Ponyboy curtis and his gang the Greasers. In the book, the Greasers are known for causing mayhem, but when their rival gang the Socs beat him and one of his friends up, his life is mixed up. This book has been recommended by Mrs. Manz.
12. The Lion, the Witch, and The Wardrobe, by C. S. Lewis
In the book The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, four kids are teleported through a wardrobe into the land called Narnia. After arriving they are told of their destiny of saving Narnia and then learn how to set it free. This book has been recommended by our librarian, Ms. Wiegreffe
13. The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien
The book the Hobbit by J.R.R. Tokien is about a hobbit named Bilbo who is persuaded to join Thorin and his 12 dwarves in a quest to recover their stolen treasure which is being guarded by a dragon named Smaug. This book is recommended by Ms. Ramos.
14. Slake’s Limbo, by Felice Holman
The book Slake’s Limbo by Felice Holman is about Aremis Slake and how he lives in the New York City subway tunnels for 121 days. This book is recommended by Ms. Culpepper.
