December Holidays; What Winter Holiday Do You Celebrate?


Winter is on its way. Its time to get festive with all of the fun holidays Winter and December bring.  December is filled with holidays for everyone to celebrate. Some people celebrate Christmas, while others celebrate Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and more! Holidays always bring fun celebrations along with the history that started it.

Christmas is an annual celebration on December 25th that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ in the Christian faith. It is the day of family and gift giving that is celebrated by billions of people around the world. Some family’s celebrate Christmas on Christmas eve due to traditions whilst other families choose to wake up to presents in the morning. Many families also celebrate Christmas as a secular holiday full of traditions meant to highlight the importance of friends, family, and celebration.

Hanukkah, coming from the Hebrew word meaning “dedication”, is a holiday that begins on the 25th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar which is usually in November or December. Hanukkah, also called “The Festival of Lights”, is celebrated by lighting a menorah, playing games, eating traditional food, and giving gifts.

Kwanzaa is a relatively new holiday compared to others; it began in 1966. Kwanzaa lasts the full week of December 26th to January 1st and honors African Heritage. It is celebrated by giving gifts and having a communal feast called Karamu, which is usually held on the 6th day.

Las Posadas is a festival and holiday celebrated in Mexico and some parts of the US. It takes place from the 16th of December to the 24th. This celebration honors Joseph and Mary from the Christian faith and how they made a journey to Bethlehem in hope for a safe home where she could give birth to Jesus.
